Mets Gamble $4 million on Marcum

Yesterday the New York Mets agreed to a 1-year contract with former Brewers pitcher Shaun Marcum, pending a physical. Today the 31-year-old righty passed his physical and the 1-year/$4 million contract was made official. According to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports, incentives could drive that price tag up to $6 million in 2013.

Marcum also got $2M in incentives in #Mets. So, he can earn a maximum of $6M.

Though Marcum has battled injuries throughout his career, he has posted a 3.62 ERA and 1.18 WHIP during the last three seasons (85 starts). Last season he went 7-4 with the Brewers with a 3.70 ERA for the Milwaukee Brewers.

Taking a gamble on a quality satarter like Marcum is worth the risk as he will round out a rotation consisting of Johan Santana, Matt Harvey, Jonathon Niese and Dillon Gee. It may also be a sign that the club is ready to gamble a little more on some free agents. If gambling is on your mind, then visit your favorite USA sports betting site and check out the over/under for Mets total wins in 2013. I usually throw a few bucks out the window every year betting the Mets to win the World Series and this year will be no different, but maybe one day this team will make me look smart.
