Mets interested in Justin Upton

According to Marc Craig of Newsday, the New York Mets are once again interested in  Arizona Diamondbacks slugger, Justin Upton, though sources believe it’s a long shot:

In a post to Newsday, Craig writes:

“The Mets have revived discussions of a trade for the Diamondbacks’ Justin Upton, two people with knowledge of the situation said Friday. However, doubts linger about whether the Mets are willing to deal enough prospects to meet the asking price for the 25-year-old rightfielder. …The Mets boast several young pitchers who could be included in a trade, but top-tier arms Matt Harvey and Zack Wheeler have been considered untouchable in trade talks this offseason, and the team has offered no indications that has changed.

One rival executive believes the Mets should explore dangling infielder Wilmer Flores, who some talent evaluators believe ultimately will play third base or first base. With the Mets, Flores and his promising bat likely would be blocked by David Wright and Ike Davis.”

Meanwhile, according to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports, NY is still interested in bringing back Scott Hairston, but only as a fall back option:

Since the trade of National League Cy-Young winner R.A. Dickey, the Mets off-season has been, well, pretty boring.  However, rumors circulating a possible trade of Justin Upton would certainly spike things up.  While I agree with Craig, a deal is probably a long-shot, it is nice to hear the Mets have entered the conversation.  Upton, to me, is a franchise player that would fit great in the middle of the lineup with David Wright and Ike Davis.  Acquiring the 25-year-old outfielder would go a long way towards boosting my confidence in the upcoming season.  Only time will tell how serious these discussions are between the two clubs but this is the first bit of news that I am happy to be writing about.

*NOTE-

Earlier in the week, the Diamondbacks and the Mariners agreed to a deal that would have sent Justin Upton to Seattle, but the two-time All-Star rejected the proposed deal, major league sources told Fox Sports.  According to Fox Sports:

“The Mariners are one of four clubs on Upton’s no-trade list. …(Upton) has been the subject of repeated trade discussions almost since the moment that Kevin Towers became the Arizona GM in the fall of 2010. Both the Rangers and Braves have pursued Upton this offseason, sources say, and other teams also have checked in.”
