New York Mets pitching prospect Zack Wheeler turned in a fine performance for the Binghamton Mets yesterday, striking out a season high 11 batters while allowing just two earned runs over 6 2/3 innings pitched.
Binghamton went on to win by a score of 3-2 as Wheeler improved to 10-6 on the season for New York’s Double-A affiliate.
Today the Mets announced the 22-year-old right-hander will be promoted to Triple-A Buffalo.
Without throwing an inning for Buffalo the question on fans mind is if Wheeler will see Queens by the end of the season. According to GM Sandy Alderson, that isn’t likely.
We will just have to see what happens. I know earlier in the year the team said it was unlikely Matt Harvey would move beyond Buffalo this season and look at how that situation has turned out. Things are a little different with Wheeler, however, as his innings total continues to rise and the team would obviously be prudent not to go beyond their predetermined limit. I’m sure most fans are excited enough about the promotion to Triple-A, as is Wheeler, who is indeed “one step closer.”
……and looking forward to playing with his new teammates in Buffalo.
