Unlikely Heroes Push the Mets Past Phillies, 6-3

Omar Quintanilla. Jeremy Hefner. Scott Hairston.  If someone told me prior to tonight’s game that those would be the names of the offensive stars of the night for the Mets, I’d have said this team was in danger of being swept tomorrow.  But that isn’t the case, as the Mets are in position to take yet another series from the Phillies tomorrow on the strength on some big offensive output from two call ups, and a pinch hit homer.

The biggest story tonight is undoubtedly Hefner, who not only pitched well enough to get the win tonight, but also connected on a solo homer which proved to be the deciding run in tonight’s contest.  Not to be outdone tonight was Omar Quintanilla who went 3 for 4 in his Mets debut with two runs scored and Scott Hairston who delivered his second homer in as many nights, but this time as a pinch hitter.  It’s very rare that a team gets two homers in one game from the nine-hole in the line up, but that’s the type of team this Mets squad has become.

Whether it’s Mike Baxter, or Mike Nickeas, Omar Quintanilla, Jeremy Hefner, Justin Turner…etc, the team responds to adversity.  The point here is that this Mets team is remarkable, if for no other reason than no matter who is forced to step into the line up, and to a lesser extent the rotation, they have delivered.  Tonight, Quintanilla and Hefner were those guys.

Who will step up tomorrow?

Watch and find out, as the Mets send Dillon Gee to the hill in an attempt to keep Cliff Lee winless on the season.

Let’s go Mets.
