Jose Reyes says Mets didn’t want him there

Three days after agreeing to a a 6-year deal worth $106 million with former New York Mets shortstop Jose Reyes, the Miami Marlins held a press conference to show off their new acquisition to the world.  The 28-year-old Reyes mentioned how much it meant to him that the Marlins called him right at 12:01 a.m., as soon as the free agency period began.  He pointed to the Marlins outward expression of their interest on more than one occasion, the love they showed him, and how the owners of the team flew in to see him the first chance they could, at 12:01 a.m.

At 12:01 am start of FA, Loria met Reyes at Hotel Caryle with newly minted #Marlins No. 7 jersey under his overcoat. #mets

While Reyes went on to politely thank the Mets for giving him his start in professional baseball and the fans for never walking away from him when he was injured, you couldn’t help coming away from this feeling as though the Mets never made him feel wanted….in fact, he flat out said it:

Reyes on #Mets, "they didn't make me an offer, they didn't want me there. It was time to move on."

I had to make sure I wasn’t mishearing things:

Jose Reyes on #mets - "They didn't want me there."

This all would have been much easier if Reyes came off more like Lebron James, but instead, he walks away as the victim and it will be interesting to see how fans react to him when he returns to Citi Field, an opportunity that he said excites him.

While the Marlins new uniforms are violently atrocious and almost gave my dog almost a seizure when he looked up at the screen during the press conference, this would have been a tough site regardless of the new threads.  The fact is simple, Jose Reyes will no longer put on a Mets uniform and instead, will be leading off for a division opponent and lined up against the team time after time again.  Let’s face it, that’s going to take some getting used to and it’s not going to be easy.

As I wrote yesterday, I’m ready to start appreciating the players that will be with the team next season, including Ruben Tejada and of course the newest additions to the bullpen.  Today was just another shot to the stomach and I’m sure as Mets fans we’ll feel many more, each time Jose flies around the base paths like a streak of teal/peach/yellow/white in his new uniform.  I think Vinny and Michael Baron of summarized today’s press conference best with their tweets below:

That press conference royally sucked. #Mets
