Mets could add a closer as early as tonight

According to Andy Martino of the Daily News, the New York Mets could be close to adding a reliever — Jon Rauch, Frank Francisco, or Brad Lidgeas early as tonight:

Mets source says getting more serious about relievers. Of the many names they've looked at, think Francisco, Rauch, Lidge.

Andy McCullough of the Star-Ledger has the same time line, but also throws Octavio Dotel‘s name back into the mix:

Hearing some within Mets org. hope they can ink a reliever tonight. Definite interest in Francisco, Rauch, Dotel. You already know this.

A reunion with Dotel would be interesting and might fit the Mets budget, but St. Louis has appeared very eager to bring back the veteran reliever while the Reds, Cardinals, Brewers, and Tigers have also shown interest.  Such competition makes me think that bringing Octavio back in an Isringhausen-esque ‘full circle’ manner is unlikely.  A reunion with former closer Francisco Rodriguez also seems unlikely after hearing Sandy Alderson’s comments to New York reporters earlier today.

We haven’t decided not to pursue him,” Alderson said, according to Adam Rubin of ESPN New York. “… So I’m sure Frankie will come up in conversation. … You shouldn’t expect this is a likelihood. I hope I didn’t create that impression.”

My guess is that it will be Frank Francisco, but at least it doesn’t look like we’ll have to wait long to see if I’m right.
