Z-Cap: Mets Lose in Extras

In what was shaping up to look like an emotional walk-off win for the Mets, on an emotional day, the Mets squandered opportunities and gave up the big inning late to drop the series finale to the Cubs in poor fashion, 10-6 (box score).

The Mets had opportunities in the eighth, and again in the 10th innings, for their best players to step up and deliver a big hit similar to what Mike Piazza did almost 10 years ago…but neither Jose Reyes nor David Wright could deliver for the struggling Mets.  I guess sometimes the story book just isn’t meant to be written…

The big issue tonight for the Mets was the way the bullpen found a bed in the eleventh, and defecated in it.  The bullpen gave up a massive 6 run inning led by the terrible pitching of Josh Stinson and Ryota Igarashi, before Dale Thayer came in to mercifully end the inning.  Too bad the damage had already been done…

As nice as a win would have been, today and tonight, was really about remembering September 11th and it’s heroes and victims.  It was about remembering the way the city and the country got back behind baseball that night in Queens when the Mets delivered something that mattered, no matter how small it truly was in the grand scheme of things.  So, I guess we can’t say too much, because it seems that story book was already written…
