Another Impressive Start for Wheeler

The New York Mets Double-A affiliate, the St. Lucie Mets defeated the Bradenton Marauders behind the right arm of newly acquired prospect Zack Wheeler.  In just his fifth start with the Mets organization, Wheeler tossed five scoreless innings allowing three hits, while striking out three and walking none:

The 21-year-old exited the game after St. Lucie took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth, and unlike the big league club, the bullpen was able to preserve the lead helping Wheeler improve to 2-2 in the process.  The five scoreless frames helped lower the right handers ERA to 2.16 and the zero walks marks the third time in which he did not allow a free pass since joining St. Lucie. He now boasts an impressive 26:5 K:BB ratio in five starts (25 innings) with his new club.

I couldn’t agree more with my MetsZilla battery mate, Jay Robotham who stated the following about the youngster’s in the Mets organization:

With things not going so well at the major league level and fans starting to take a glance towards the future, it’s nice to see guys youngsters like Wheeler, Matt Harvey, Jeurys Familia, and Darin Gorski flat out dealing in the minors.  There’s still a long ways to go for each, but the success they’re enjoying between Class-A and Double-A is encouraging.  Fact is, it has been a while since New York has had such a promising crop of young pitchers down on the farm and even if it’s likely to be a couple years before we see them in Queens, there’s at least hope that help is on the way.”
